Function: it is the spring strainer for the oil supply.
The reason this ends up on an order: a service item; the mesh is what protects the bearing surfaces downstream. Supplied as a pack of 4, which is how these small parts are normally bought — you rarely need just one.
Fitting note: Renew rather than re-fit if the mesh is distorted.
