This is the crankcase for the DLE 170 twin, a large-displacement two-stroke petrol twin for very large scale models.
The part itself is the crankcase, which carries the crankshaft bearings and seals, and on a two-stroke engine also forms the induction chamber for the fuel charge.
Why it is replaced: the crankcase is replaced when the bearing bores or the seal faces are damaged, or after a failure that has scored the case internally.
Fitting note: Clean the case thoroughly and check the bearing bores for ovality before pressing in new bearings.
